McDonald's
Context
Redesign project at Ironhack's UX/UI Bootcamp Portugal.
Role: UX Research // UI Design
Timeframe: 4 days
Date: October 2023

Introduction
For the third project at Ironhack, I needed to redesign an app of my choice and improve the user experience. I decided to redesign McDonald's.
I needed to conduct a heuristic analysis and update 3 to 7 screens of a specific user flow.
Heuristic Analysis
I used the Neilson Norman Group's list of 10 usability heuristics to help guide my analysis. A few of the key points that stood out to me were:
Issues with "Consistency and standards"
-
There needed to be more consistency in the icons. Some had colour when selected, while others were only black.
-
On the menu, the icons have labels, but the user cannot read the total of all of them.
Issues with implementing "Flexibility and efficiency of use"
-
When opening the "Menu" or "Restaurants", the app goes to the website inside the actual app. So, the user is bombarded with information about the cookies and the options to select. This happens every time the user clicks on something.
Issues with implementing "Aesthetic and minimalist design"
-
There is much clutter, mainly on the homepage.

Business Analysis
I looked at a few apps, including BurguerKing, KFC, Pizza Hut, and H3. Seeing how they display food, the menus, coupons and orders was helpful.
I looked at some other apps where Yellow and white were combined. Even though I planned to focus on dark mode, I wanted to make the possibility of white mode. Since combining those two colours is hard, I searched for good ways to do it.
Mid-Fi to Hi-fi
The mid-fi designs allowed me to play around with how I wanted to represent different elements within the redesign. However, I tried to keep the physical presence of McDonald's present on the app, basing my ideas on the automatic machines of other food and the displayed menus.

In my solution, I streamlined the user's experience, creating a more straightforward interface that met their expectations based on experience with other platforms while still feeling like McDonald's.
Later, I discovered McDonald's Brang Guidelines, where I realized that it's supposed always to use white mode. With this in mind, I did a version that followed those Guidelines.
